  • Essay:
The main influence in my life who has encouraged me to be tobacco free is Corey Wilcox. I met him in eighth-grade band; he has been a great friend for the past two years. Corey is an active member of FCA(Fellowship of Christian Athletes)and loves sports and recreational dancing. He has participated in school football and track and is looking forward to a career in the Marines. Obviously, he is very active and could not tolerate tobacco with his lifestyle. He has always been very open with his opinion on tobacco and has tried to get several of his peers to quit. He has also prevented several people including me, from starting.

One day, I was at my friend's house and we found a pack of cigarettes on the side of the road. We thought it would be cool to smoke them; so we got on his four-wheelers and started down the dusty road. We saw an old pond off to the side of the road, and went to the other side to smoke them. Corey who lived next to my friend, drove up to us to see what was happening. We hid the cigarettes as he started to talk to us, He said,"You think I am stupid! I saw you hide those cigarettes." As he started to tell us about his mess up with tobacco our mouths dropped open from shock. He told us that he started to do it until his hero helped him through it. He said it was so hard to get rid of the "want to" that he found himself chewing gum to help get rid of that desire. When he got over his addiction to nicotine, he changed his whole focus and drive and got his life back on the right track.

At age fifteen pressure from peers is hard to overcome, good role models like Corey Wilcox and youth pastors from my church have influence in my life. Peer pressure is sometimes hard to overcome, and the best way that I can deal with it is to hand it to God and then remember that day with Corey, the look on his face, and his genuine concern for my well being.
