Arkansas students grades 6-12 created television spots about the dangers of secondhand smoke to submit as entries for the annual SOS drama contest, “The Big Pitch. This year, SOS received 28 entries, the most received in the history of the contest! The television spots were sent to an independent panel of judges from Stephen F. Austin State University’s drama department in Nacogdoches, Texas, and they selected the following teams as first-, second- and third-place winners:
• First place – Fayetteville High School Team A
• Second place – Arkansas High School
• Third place – Fayetteville High School Team B
Each team received store credit to purchase new drama equipment for their schools. The television spot created by Fayetteville High School Team A will be included in the next SOS media campaign, which will air statewide.
For the first time, SOS asked Arkansans to help select a People’s Choice winner for the 2008 contest. Entries were posted on stampoutsmoking.com, and after receiving more than 1,100 votes, Haas Hall Academy was selected as the first recipient of the People’s Choice Award.
