15 Schools To Receive $1,000 For Stamp Out Smoking Service-Learning Projects - January 15th, 2008

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (Dec. 19, 2007) – Students at 15 Arkansas High Schools have been selected to receive $1,000 per school to implement service-learning projects for Stamp Out Smoking (SOS), the media and public relations campaign for the Arkansas Department of Health’s Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Program (TPCP).


This program provides an opportunity for high school students to serve their community by organizing events and educating them about the dangers of tobacco use and secondhand smoke. The 15 schools selected are:
Brinkley High School
Clarksville High School
Concord High School
Deer High School
Eureka Springs High School
Forrest City High School
Har-Ber High School
Hazen High School
Hot Springs High School
J.A. Fair High School
Little Rock Central High School
Mena High School
Nettleton High School
Osceola High School
Van Buren High School Medical Academy

Students at these schools will organize, coordinate, and host anti-tobacco events within their school and community. They will also have the experience of communicating with editors and coordinating media relations for their own projects.

Next spring one of the 15 teams will be selected as the “Best of the Best” for its work of fulfilling the requirements of the program and reaching its community with the appropriate message. Each of the six members of the winning team will receive an educational reward of $500. The winning team will be announced in early May 2008.
The Arkansas Department of Health Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Program goals are to prevent youth from beginning tobacco use, help youth and adults quit, reduce exposure to secondhand smoke, and reduce tobacco use among high-risk populations.
